About Hans Jochem Bakker

Hans Jochem Bakker (born 1948) lives and works in the Netherlands. He is a self-taught artist coming from an old artist family. Inspired by such luminaries as Salvador Dalí, Miró and Picasso, he incorporated elements of their southern temperament into his subject matter. This manifests itself in a particular interest in bullfighting, birds, horses and women.

Artistic evolution

In his early period, Bakker mainly followed the style of Salvador Dalí, with works full of mystical and nightmarish images. This period produced highly detailed and extraordinarily cleverly painted visions. Later, his method evolved into a more expressionist style. The artist freed himself from his self-imposed limitations, and his new work exudes unbridled joy at this liberation.

Passion and movement

Bakker paints as spontaneously as possible, honestly and straight from his passionate artist soul. Everything in his work is in motion, and that is the main reason for him to keep painting. This dynamic completes the act of painting, creating a painting that is a unity of form, color and movement.
