About the artist: Hans Jochem Bakker

An autodidact with a rich artistic background

Hans Jochem Bakker (born 1948) lives and works in the Netherlands. A self-taught artist from an old artistic family, he has been inspired by great names such as Salvador Dalí, Miró and Picasso. These influences can be seen in his subject matter, including a particular interest in bullfighting, birds, horses and women.

An evolving style

In his early period, Bakker mainly followed in the footsteps of Salvador Dalí, with subject matter full of mystical and nightmarish images. This resulted in highly detailed and handsomely painted visions. Later his method evolved into a more expressionistic style, in which he freed himself from his self-imposed limitations. This liberation brought an unbridled joy to his work, which is characterized by spontaneous, honest and passionate expressions.

The essence of movement

Everything in Bakker’s work is in motion, which is also the main reason for him to keep painting. This dynamism completes the act of painting, making each painting a unity of form, color and movement.
