Description

The Alekhin Defense is an opening with the Knight in chess, characterized by the moves 1.e4 Pf6. The move looks strange because white gets a wide center with 2.e5. However, the idea is that black lures the pawns forward and undermines the white center with moves like …d6. Alexander Alekhin popularized this move at the beginning of the last century. In 1935 he played chess against Max Euwe and the latter won the match 15½-14½, after which Euwe became world champion. The immediate result was a huge revival of chess in the Netherlands: young and old wanted to learn chess. Olav van Lede is a great chess lover and “Alekhin’s Defense” is his ode to the game and its grandmasters. The horse, with its special eye, referring to the special move is placed on an old Soviet chess book by Alekhin from 1971. The horse itself is painted with acrylic. The canvas is 5cm thick and measures 50x70cm and comes with certificate of authenticity. On display in our gallery in Amersfoort, but can also be ordered online (insured shipping Netherlands € 12,50) Delivery time 1-3 working days. For foreign orders, please feel free to contact us.

Artist Olav van Lede challenges the common advice to let go of the past. He doubts this is always the best approach, given the many unique and valuable moments the past has to offer, full of learning moments, nostalgia and innovation. In his work, Van Lede focuses on historical documents and subjects, connecting them with vivid icons or objects. He explores various themes, including space travel, war, strategy, culinary traditions and nostalgia. For him, the creative process begins far outside his studio, where he seeks historical sources from collectors, antique dealers and museums. In this way, Olav brings remarkable, moving and sometimes confronting facts and moments from the past back into focus, resulting in artworks that are both beautiful and meaningful.

Born June 28, 1976 in Montreal, Canada, Olav van Lede traveled through Belgium, England and France before landing in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 21st century. There he found shelter in an old studio in the Oud Zuid district, where he lived for many years and developed himself artistically, inspired by such luminaries as Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. This period saw the creation of his first works, which soon found their way into various homes and offices.

With his effervescent ideas, Olav then launched his own interior design line, including small furniture, lighting and accessories. All infused with a touch of humor and designed under the motto “a smile in the mind,” under his own label and management. But in early 2022, he again felt the urge to return to his original passion. He again took up a studio and focused entirely on his art.

Since 2022, Olav has received several awards with his innovative, recognizable and original style. His work is now represented by several renowned galleries and is in demand by art lovers worldwide.
