Espen Greger Hagen was born in 1964 in Trondheim, but spent much of his childhood in Tanzania. In 1980, he studied drawing in Trondheim before studying painting and sculpture at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. After studying in Vancouver, Hagen studied painting and sculpture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, which he successfully completed in 1990.

Hagen was Herman Brood’s right-hand man, with whom he worked closely from the mid-1990s until Herman’s death on July 11, 2001. The Norwegian, who was living in Amsterdam at the time of his death, died of cardiac arrest on April 10, 2008.
