Impressions of Bernard's Artworks
The celebrated Spanish artist Bernard combines Impressionism and abstraction to create vibrant, painterly seascapes. In these works, the illusion of form is created through color, brushstrokes, and texture, rather than through lines. In his signature style, he creates a backdrop of a swirling blue sea and sky, painted with an open, spontaneous touch reminiscent of the early Impressionists. The boats that dominate the foreground, however, are semi-abstract; they are rendered as jewel-like mosaics of ochre, magenta, and very light green, causing the entire canvas to sparkle with light, energy, and joie de vivre. Bernard was born in Alicante in 1964. He spent much of his free time in his family’s studio—alongside his father and sister, both of whom were professional artists—and went sailing whenever the opportunity arose. He was admitted to the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Alcoi to study painting and, influenced by his surroundings and lifestyle, specialized in seascapes.
Since then, he has built up a large following, both at home and abroad, and we are delighted to include a magnificent collection of his work in our portfolio. “I’ve been sailing since I was a child and wanted to convey the pure thrill of racing across the sea. The feeling of the wind rushing past you, the way sunlight and shadow create beautiful colors, the taste of the sea: the whole experience is a joyful feast for the senses, and I try to capture all those feelings in my paintings."
