About Herman Brood
An anecdote about his boyhood reads that in 1953 Brood’s family doctor allegedly stated that with his color blindness, Brood could become anything but a painter. He received his first piano lessons in 1959. He could not keep up at school: he preferred to play the piano in his father’s old factory in Zwolle. In 1964 Brood went to the Art Academy in Arnhem and became a member of the local beat group The Moans. The band did many gigs for American soldiers in West Germany and Brood was occasionally given a pill to keep him awake. Thus began his addiction. In 1967 he joined Cuby and the Blizzards (album Greetings from Grollo). He met Tekie Buissink, with whom he had a brief relationship. On May 24, 1968, their son Marcel was born. When the record company learned he was using drugs, he was kicked out of the band. An unclear period followed in which Brood regularly ended up in jail for burglaries and drug dealing.
