The story behind ‘The Cyclist’
Yoy Ciliberti’s family doctor had advised him to exercise more because his sedentary lifestyle would get him into trouble. After trying unsuccessfully with rugby, boxing and basketball, Yoy looked for a sport he could play sitting down. Cycling seemed the ideal choice. He bought a bicycle with coaster brakes and all the accessories to go with it. Full of conviction, he decided to put his fitness to the test by descending the highest street in the village. After only 10 meters, he discovered that braking with his legs was more complicated than thought. The next 400 meters were the longest of his life, and for the next two months he had to sit carefully on a fluffy feather pillow. Eventually he sold his bicycle and switched to chess, standing.
