Sergeant Germán Echeverría was not afraid of fire. As a child, he loved lighting his father’s cigarettes; he loved that specific smell coming from just-lit matches. His mother always said, “Don’t play with fire or you’ll wet the bed.”
In autumn, he amused himself by making bonfires with his friends and then throwing handfuls of salt on the flames, listening fascinated by the crackling of the salt. One night, after burning all the fallen leaves in his garden, he dreamed that he was near a large tree and suddenly he got a terrible urge to urinate, which he did calmly and with great pleasure. The next morning, upon awakening, he made the most important decision of his life: from now on he would fight fire without pity. He went to firefighting school and today he is the fire chief of his neighborhood fire department. Everyone knows him as “The Lucifer.”
