When he was eight, everyone felt sorry for Rubén Ponce. His little legs were as skinny as two sticks and fell forward as he ran. But if he had the ball at his feet, there was no one to take it from him unless they tripped him and he fell to the ground.
His father soon realized his son’s great potential and the lack of muscle strength needed to succeed in soccer. For ten years, his father put him on a strict diet of pasta Bolognese, Spanish omelets, scrambled eggs with chorizo and rich stews with chickpeas and lots of bacon.
