Magnolia versus Hazel: a unique work of art by Karin Vermeer
Unique combination of photographic techniques and acrylic on linen
Unlike the small editions Karin Vermeer usually produces, Magnolia vs. Hazal is a one-of-a-kind. Karin relates, “A while ago I walked into my garden and saw that the magnolia had begun to bloom. That has always been a favorite for me. This tree is so beautiful to look at, but the story behind it is also extraordinary. Mrs. Derks planted the tree with her sister when she was a little girl. She had lived there all her life, even when we started in our new house that connected our gardens. Mrs. Derks passed away some time ago at an advanced age (she must have been about 84, I think), but she left such a special gift in our neighborhood. I take pictures of the trees every year, but this year I started making new designs with the trees. The size of this painting is 100x130cm, mounted on an aluminum frame, created with photography, printed on paper, pasted on the canvas and finished with gel medium for texture, acrylic, oil paint and oil sticks. I applied it with brushes, sponges and palette knives.’

About the artist: Karin Vermeer
Karin Vermeer creates her artwork by combining a mix of different photographs, images and paint on both computer and canvas. Her favorite subject is the female face, using photographs of people, old walls, grunge posters and other interesting subjects to create new images. After the digital part is finished, the image is printed and she begins to paint over it. She creates the artwork with many layers of texture, gels and paint, making the digital image tangible.
